Virslīga season 2025, Matchday 35 (of 36). FS Jelgava and FK Metta played a fair 2-2 draw in the Zemgale Olympic Center (the home stadium of Jelgava). This result kept the guest team FK Metta in a difficult situation regarding the Virslīga relegation battle.
FS Jelgava (led by Aleksandrs Basovs) stood in the comfortable 6th position in the Virslīga table, by collecting four points in its last five league clashes. In the opposition, standing in the 10th position, every point meant a lot to FK Metta (under the guidance of Andris Riherts), who were in a tough fight to avoid the automatic relegation. Their form (in terms of the last five league games) were similar to Jelgava, as they collected three points — by defeating FK Auda (whose match against FK Grobiņa you can read here) in the previous round (Matchday 34) by the final score of 3-2, scoring the winner hit in the extra-time.
FS Jelgava played in a 4-1-4-1 reminiscent shape in the opposition of FK Metta‘s 5-4-1 formation. The home team’s alone striker, Nigerian Kingsley Emenike (2004 born) took the lead for his team early (6′, 1-0), in addition to offering support in the defensive phase, in some situations. Jelgava started with midfielders possessing great playmaking abilities (two Czech central midfielders Martin Hašek and David Holoubek, and FK RFS loanee defensive midfielder Gļebs Žaleiko), whose presence and play (and creative solutions) granted the fluidity during the build-up phase. In the middle of the 2nd half, when a one-goal lead was with the away team (1-2), Filip Hašek (brother of Martin) scored an equalizer by a magnificent free-kick shot — leveling the score and securing one point for the team at the end (2-2). Necessary to give highlight for the solid defensive performance of the two centre-backs (team captain Kristers Penkevics and Kristers Aļekseičiks).

FK Metta‘s tactic was organized to demonstrate massive resilience at the opposition offense, in addition to avoid the unnecessary runs/pressing, and to play attacking minded football. Despite the high pressure that was on the team, they kept their composure, and presented a fluid and brave play. Nigerian striker Sadiq Saleh (2006 born) and Sierra Leonean right midfielder Abdul Bangura (2005) guaranteed the proper team dynamism through their agility and pace; in the back line (5-defender line in defending, 3-man set up at the offense), centre-backs Ivo Minkevics (LCB) and Bangura’s compatriot Mohamed Bai Kamara (CB, 2005) showcased great resistance and creative (defensive and supportive) solutions under the opposing attacks. Young left midfielder Rūdolfs Kļavinskis (2007 born, team captain of the Latvian U19 national team) scored two goals (1-1 and 1-2, the first one by penalty), and came up as key player for FK Metta. Substitution players Kristofers Rēķis (LM, 65′ on) and Emīls Evelons (STR, 75′ on) definitely gave new pulse for the team, for the last period of the game.
