FK Kauno Žalgiris Secured a Late Victory Over KÍ Klaksvík
FK Kauno Žalgiris
FK Kauno Žalgiris, led by the Croatian coach Željko Sopić, lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation.
FK Kauno Žalgiris’ attacking players did not apply an aggressive high press during the opening stages of the match. Instead, they remained compact in a mid block, allowing Klaksvík’s defenders time on the ball while focusing on closing passing lanes into midfield. This approach helped them maintain their defensive shape and prevent the visitors from progressing through central areas. (Example down below).
Due to the pressure Klaksvík placed on Kauno Žalgiris’ central midfielders, the home side looked to progress possession mainly through the wide areas. The full- backs and wingers became important outlets during the build up phase, allowing Kauno Žalgiris to bypass the pressure in the middle of the pitch.
Throughout the first half, Kauno Žalgiris also attempted to create attacking situations through quick passing combinations, particularly down the right flank. Their players frequently exchanged short passes before looking for overlaps or crosses into the penalty area.
When possession was lost, Kauno Žalgiris reacted well with immediate counter pressing, especially in midfield, limiting Klaksvík’s opportunities to launch quick counter attacks.
At the beginning of the second half, Kauno Žalgiris came out with much greater intensity and completely controlled the rhythm of the game. They dominated possession, circulated the ball patiently, and forced Klaksvík to spend long periods defending inside their own half.
From around the 58th minute, Kauno Žalgiris increased the intensity of their pressing. Their attacking players started closing down Klaksvík’s defenders much higher up the pitch, forcing long clearances and several misplaced passes while recovering possession closer to the opposition goal.
Their attacking approach remained focused on using the wings throughout the second half. By stretching Klaksvík’s defensive line, Kauno Žalgiris managed to create more crossing opportunities, dangerous cut-backs, and several promising chances inside the penalty area.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute. Leon Kraković received the ball on the left wing, isolated his defender in a one-versus-one situation, produced an excellent feint to create space, and finished with a precise shot into the far corner to score the winning goal.
KÍ Klaksvík
KÍ Klaksvík, led by the Swedish coach Magnus Powell, lined up in a 3-4-3 formation.
KÍ Klaksvík did not apply significant pressure on Kauno Žalgiris’ defensive line during the opening stages of the match. Instead, they preferred to remain compact defensively, allowing the home side to build from the back while protecting the central areas and waiting for opportunities to win possession.
After recovering the ball, Klaksvík mainly looked to attack through quick transitions rather than sustained possession. Their midfield attempted to move the ball forward quickly towards the wide players, who were responsible for carrying the main attacking threat.
Around the 20th minute, Klaksvík produced their first real chance of the match following an attack that started down the right wing. The move highlighted their intention to use the flanks as their primary attacking route throughout the first half.
Although they managed several promising attacking sequences, they struggled to create clear cut chances due to Kauno Žalgiris’ compact defensive organisation and effective midfield pressing.
At the beginning of the second half, Klaksvík were pushed much deeper into their own half as Kauno Žalgiris dominated possession and increased the tempo. For several minutes, they found it difficult to progress the ball beyond midfield.
As the second half continued, Klaksvík gradually became more dangerous by attacking through quick wing transitions whenever they recovered possession. They also created one of their best opportunities from a direct free kick, forcing the home side to remain alert defensively.
Despite improving offensively during the latter stages of the match, Klaksvík lacked quality in the final third and were unable to convert their chances. They eventually conceded the decisive goal late in the game and were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle.
Two players who stood out in this match:
Amine Benchaib (FK Kauno Žalgiris), central midfielder born 1998.
Benchaib was one of the standout performers in midfield, consistently showing excellent dribbling ability in tight spaces. He remained composed under pressure and was able to beat opponents with quick changes of direction, helping his team progress the ball through central areas. His acceleration over short distances allowed him to escape pressing situations and carry the ball into advanced positions, making him an important link between defense and attack.
Joris Moutachy (FK Kauno Žalgiris), right-back born 1997.
Moutachy delivered an energetic performance on the right side, combining excellent pace with a strong work rate. He frequently supported the attack by making overlapping runs and providing width in possession, while also recovering quickly to fulfil his defensive responsibilities. Defensively, he was reliable in one versus one situations, making several solid tackles and using his speed to recover possession during defensive transitions. His ability to contribute effectively at both ends of the pitch made him one of the most influential players in the match.
