Fixture: Brøndby IF vs. Sønderjyske
Date: Monday August 17, 2026
Venue: Brøndby Stadion
Result: Brøndby IF 3-2 Sønderjyske
Brøndby IF secured a 3-2 victory over Sønderjyske following a match that featured contrasting phases of control. Both teams started in a 4-2-3-1 system, with Sønderjyske controlling the majority of possession and creating the better attacking opportunities during the opening ten minutes. Brøndby gradually established control through their ability to play through the thirds, connect with midfielders making dynamic forward runs, and exploit spaces between lines.
Brøndby’s attacking threats were particularly effective in the first half, allowing them to take a 3-0 lead before halftime. Sønderjyske responded strongly after the interval, changing to a 4-1-2-3 and scoring twice to reduce the deficit. The final stages became increasingly transition-heavy, with long balls, aerial duels, fouls, and set pieces becoming major components of the match.
Brøndby opened the scoring in the 17th minute following an effective combination in the wide-left channel. #30 Jordi Vanlerberghe played a forward diagonal pass into #4 Luis Binks, who found #18 Max Ejdum between the lines. Ejdum connected with #27 Mats Köhlert before combining with #7 Olti Hyseni through a third-man run in behind the defensive line. Ejdum entered the assist zone and delivered toward the penalty spot, where #29 Mads Frøjær-Jensen finished first time.
Brøndby continued to demonstrate their ability to play through the thirds and consistently find midfielders making dynamic forward movements. Their second goal in the 28th minute again highlighted their ability to create opportunities through direct progression. Binks played a long ball behind the defensive line for Hyseni, who forced the opposing center back into a turnover within their own 18 yard box. #99 Bartosz Slisz recovered possession and played forward into Ejdum at the top of the penalty area. Ejdum then produced a disguised pass into Frøjær-Jensen, who had the time and space to finish into the bottom corner.
Brøndby added a third goal just before halftime. Following a 50/50 duel won in their defensive third, #2 Oliver Villadsen played a long ball forward for #21 Marcus Younis. Younis’ long-range effort forced a save, with #51 Oskar Fenger collecting the rebound before finding Hyseni, who finished to make it 3-0.
Brøndby made two substitutions at halftime, with #38 Jacob Ambæk replacing #18 Max Ejdum and #42 Mathias Jensen replacing #51 Oskar Fenger. Sønderjyske also changed their structure to a 4-1-2-3, introducing #4 Daniel Grétarsson for #32 David Boison.
Brøndby continued where they left off, dominating possession, duels, and goal-scoring opportunities during the opening stages of the second half. However, Sønderjyske gradually began to regain momentum.
Sønderjyske pulled a goal back in the 57th minute from an attacking set piece originating from a deep wide area. #7 Sefer Emini collected the third ball and played forward into #12 Maxime Soulas. Soulas’ touch took him away from goal, allowing him to provide service in a 3v3 situation at the back post, where #26 Bubacarr Tambedou rose highest to head the ball into the net.
Brøndby made another change in the 61st minute, with #11 Filip Bundgaard replacing Hyseni.
In the 63rd minute, Sønderjyske scored again after regaining possession in their defensive third. The visitors produced a sustained sequence of possession before #8 Mohamed Cherif received the ball freely inside the penalty area and finished into the bottom corner, reducing the deficit to 3-2.
Leading into the 70th minute, the match became increasingly open. Both teams began using a higher frequency of long balls, with aerial duels and second-ball situations becoming increasingly important. The team able to win the second ball and secure possession was often able to establish the next phase of attack.
Both teams made further substitutions as the match progressed, with Brøndby introducing #19 Sho Fukuda and #10 Daniel Wass, while Sønderjyske brought on #9 Matthew Hoppe and #17 Anders Hoeg. The final stages became highly transition-oriented, with physical duels, fouls, set pieces, and direct play accounting for a significant portion of the match. Brøndby ultimately managed the final stages effectively enough to protect their 3-2 lead, despite Sønderjyske’s strong second-half response.
