Aarhus GF continue to struggle in their title defense and Odense earn another point away from home.
Matchday 5 in the Superliga, and the audience is starting to see more of what the clubs are made of in the Danish top flight. This game finished 2-2 in the temporary stadium in the Vejlby stadium. AGF manager, Jakob Poulsen is struggling to return to winning form from last season. Thomas Thomasberg finds his team in the middle of the pack. AGF came out in a 1-3-4-2-1 and OB were in a 1-4-2-3-1. People familiar with these teams will know that these were largely the formations used last season by these teams. Not much personnel has been changed. The game model between these two are very similar. Against the ball, both teams pressed intensely throughout the whole game. Both of OB’s goals were scored by Jann-Fiete Arp capitalizing on loose touches in AGFs own half. Arp, in the prime of his career, was the MOTM. Arp is probably good enough to be starting in a top 5 league. AGF scored through more sustained possession movements. AGF were the better team. AGF were able to break their opponents down through dribbling and passing often. Since Arp is a well known commodity and in the prime of his career, I will highlight lesser known players who played well.
Standout players throughout the match:
Mouhammade Camara (Aarhus GF) LCB, 19, Mali
Camara has a big physical profile standing at 1,92m in LCB. He is young. Camara is getting first team minutes for the first time this season and looks the part. This player times challenges well and makes life uncomfortable for OB forwards when they are receiving the ball with their back to goal. Camara is skilled at breaking lines with sharp passing but did struggle on one occasion when facing intense pressing from OB forwards. The video below will show good challenges while staying on his feet. The last clip will highlight an instance where he was a little indecisive on whether to close down on a forward or dropping deeper and defending space in behind.
Tobias Bech (Aarhus GF) LW, 24, Denmark
Tobias is a more established Superliga talent and had a great game by creating chances. This player played as a left footed 2nd striker on the left side in AGFs formation. Transfermarket has him valued around 4m Euro and I think this valuation will continue to rise given his talent and age. I’ve edited a short clip below to show you his speed of thought and accurate passing in the final third of the pitch.
James Gomez (Odense Boldklub) RCB, 24, Gambia
This player looks like someone with an excellent foundation of what it takes to play CB on a consistent basis. In this small sample size, you are able to see a lot of great moments of shot blocking and areal clearances. In my opinion, these actions were the result of Gomez taking a good starting position. Given that the player is now entering the prime years of his career, I wouldn’t be surprised if a new level is reached this time next year, and Gomez is playing on a better team.
