In a hard-fought and heated encounter full of fouls and borderline duels, Kuressaare sealed their league survival by defeating Esiliiga side Viimsi JK 2–0, completing a 3–0 aggregate victory after a 1–0 win in the first leg.
Kuressaare, coached by Sander Post in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation when in possession of the ball, played often direct bypassing their experienced midfield duo, composed by Sinilaid and Antonov.
Out of possession, they shifted into a 1-4-4-2 shape, with attacking midfielder Domov stepping up alongside striker Kivi to form a front two in the press. They were well organized when defending their own box, with the full-backs positioned effectively to deal with crosses and to track opponents’ blind-side runs into the area.
Kuressaare scored both goals following a long throw-in delivered by their right-back Jekimov from the middle third, with their striker Kivi who demonstrated the ability to attack the space behind the duel and finish precisely with both feeet (68´ and 75´).
Viimsi JK, under the long-standing guidance of Ivo Lehtmets—who has taken charge of over 300 matches—set up in a 1-3-5-2 formation. The hosts enjoyed sustained control in the build-up phase, with the midfield trio (highligthed in the image below) of Laidvee, Saar and Murage playing a key role. Their composure in tight areas and ability to turn away from pressure enabled Viimsi to move the ball cleanly through the thirds.
They often circulated the ball around Kuressaare’s defensive block before exploiting the space behind the opposition’s front two to progress, taking advantage of their opponents’ lack of vertical compactness (as shown in the image below).
