Aalesunds FK and Viking FK played out a 1–1 draw in Round 14 of the Eliteserien. Both goals came from set pieces, with each team creating several chances from dead-ball situations. The goals either side of half-time proved enough to earn a point apiece.

Aalesunds FK, coached by Kjetil Rekdal in a 1-3-5-2 formation, man-marked the opposition on defensive goal-kicks, forcing long balls that they were able to recover (see video below).

They used blocking movements on offensive corners to create space for right wing-back Marius Andresen at the far post (see video below)

Viking FK, coached by Morten Jensen in a 1-4-3-3 formation, kept their wingers wide during the build-up phase and rotated positions while maintaining their overall shape. Goalkeeper Lubomir Belko frequently looked to find left winger Edvin Austbø in behind with accurate long passes (see video below).

They used short-corner routines to create overloads near the ball, generating several scoring opportunities (see video below).

Viking FK took the lead in the final seconds of the first half as Kristoffer Askildsen scored with a powerful and precise direct free-kick.

Aalesunds responded in the opening seconds of the second half as Danish midfielder Mathias Christensen (formerly of FC Helsingør) scored with an excellent long-range volley. The goal came directly from the restart, with Håkon Butli Hammer winning the second ball after a long pass from left centre-back Ólafur Gudmundsson before setting up the attack (see video below).

Standout Players throughout the Match:

Henrik Melland (Aalesunds FK), offensive midfielder born 2005.

Henrik is an attacking midfielder with good awareness and vision. He demonstrated excellent close control by dribbling past opponents and delivered accurate crosses from indirect free-kicks. Despite playing only the final 13 minutes, he showed bravery, composure, and strong mentality when taking on defenders in key moments.

Henrik appears ready for a move to one of the top three clubs in the league after this season. In the long term, he has the potential to play for a mid-table club in Serie A or Ligue 1.

Niklas Fuglestad (Viking FK), right winger born 2006.

Nicklas is a left-footed inverted winger with strong 1v1 attacking ability. He found space between the lines to combine effectively with teammates and attacked the space in behind with well-timed runs, demonstrating good pace and movement. He created a clear chance by committing his defender, shifting the ball onto his left foot, and delivering a low cross to Peter Christiansen, whose close-range effort was saved.

Nicklas could be an excellent fit for a top Portuguese club as a long-term investment. With continued development, he has the potential to progress to a low- to mid-table club in the Premier League or Bundesliga within the next five years.

Vetle Auklend (Viking FK), left-back born 2005.

Vetle supported the attack with well-timed overlapping runs and delivered dangerous outswinging crosses. He played accurate forward passes and showed strength in aerial duels. Comfortable under pressure, he was able to change direction at speed with the ball to escape opponents’ pressing. Defensively, he positioned himself well to intercept switches of play and crosses from free-kicks, demonstrating good timing when dropping and winning aerial challenges.

Vetle profiles well for a mid-table Eredivisie club, where he could continue his development and potentially become a prospect for low-table Serie A or LaLiga teams in the future.

Edvin Austbø (Viking FK), left winger born 2005.

Edvin is a fast inverted winger with strong 1v1 attacking ability. Explosive in direct duels, he consistently beat opponents using his pace and sharp changes of direction with the ball. He attacked the space in behind with well-timed runs and delivered dangerous, driven crosses with his right foot. His left-footed finishing lacked consistency and precision.

Edvin would be a strong fit for a Championship club aiming for promotion. By improving his finishing ability, he could develop into an asset for low- to mid-table Premier League teams.

Tobias Moi (Viking FK), defensive midfielder born 2006.

Tobias is a defensive midfielder with strong ball-recovery ability. He demonstrated good awareness and vision, playing accurate long passes over the opposition’s defensive line and connecting play effectively with short combinations. Brave in aerial duels and tackles, he also showed good game intelligence by stopping dangerous counterattacks with well-timed tactical fouls.

Tobias would benefit from regular playing time in a competitive environment such as LaLiga 2 in Spain or Serie B in Italy. His ability to protect the defence and initiate quick transitions could be valuable for teams with a more defensive approach.
