Nine Goals, Endless Momentum Shifts and Defensive Vulnerability: Vejle Survive Hillerød 5–4 in a Wild, Open Game That Could Have Easily Gone Either Way
Vejle, managed by Claus Norgaard, played a 1-4-2-3-1 and stayed true to that shape in and out of possession. Both of their full-backs moved in a high position in possession and the team built out in a 2-3 shape once they reached the middle third. Hillerød deployed a 1-4-4-2 and mostly stayed in a mid- to low-block playing against the ball for long periods in the game. There was occasion where they pressed effectively and made life uncomfortable for Vejle in their build up phase.
Hillerød Standout players:
Jonathan Witt (CB, right footed, 33 yr old)
Demonstrated the ability to create chances by sending accurate long balls over the top. Witt was also consistent defending his penalty area well. The biggest error in his play was getting beat for pace. But this profile works in Hillerød game model of defending deep and looking to play long once possession is won.
Sebastian Larsen (LB, right footed, 22 yr old)
Larsen’s biggest issue was providing width consistently as an inverted fullback. Player provided one nice entry pass to break lines. His best quality, and my reasoning for including him was his discipline 1v1 defending. I see potential for this player to reach a higher level at RB instead of LB as someone who prioritizes defensive responsibilities.
Vejle standout players:
Tabias Bach (LM, right footed, 22 yr old)
In a game where 9 goals were scored, there is a lot I could write about. But if you only take away one thing from this game, it should be to be aware of Vejle’s #16, Tobias Bach. Aarhus GF moved off from him this summer and based on this performance, Tobias should be playing back in the Superliga or a equivalent level. This player scored a goal, provided two assists and drew the foul for the penalty kick for Vejle in this game. When this player has time on the ball or space to push play forward, he will do so and be a threat to the opponent but cutting inside or dribbling wide and sending in accurate crosses. The other recommendation I would give is that this is a player who can play LM, CM or RM if needed. Below I will share a video of his on the ball contributions.
